Breeds scattered within the Mediterranean. Overwinters within the Mediterranean and W Africa (up to Senegambia) (BirdLife International 2021). Migratory (Olsen & Larsson 2004), though an increasing number of birds are resident due to the occurrence of abundant and predictable food in some places (Oro & Martínez-Abraín 2009).

A colonial corvid with a breeding distribution covering most of Europe, except Mediterranean and Arctic climates. In Fennoscandia, restricted to the SW and W coast of Finland. N European and Russian populations are migratory, spreading across more S latitudes from N Spain to Turkey in winter (Waterhouse 1949), although this is not reflected in the recovery map which shows most birds in W Europe.

A large shearwater present in the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, dispersing in the Indian Ocean too. Now largely recognized as two distinct species: Cory’s Shearwater C. borealis, from the East Atlantic Ocean, breeding from Berlengas (off Portugal), Canary Islands to Madeira and the Azores; and Scopoli’s Shearwater C. diomedea, breeding in the Mediterranean Sea, with a few pairs on the Atlantic coast of France.

Breeds in temperate latitudes from W Europe to C Asia (BirdLife International 2021), it is colonizing N Europe, possibly due to climate change (Keller et al. 2020). Migratory strategies vary from resident to partial migrant or migratory (overall, increasing migratory behavior with increasing breeding latitude).

Two species reported under this section. Water Pipit (A. spinoletta) breeds in alpine grasslands from Cantabria to Balkans and western Turkey (ssp. spinoletta), and winter at lower altitudes at mid latitudes across Europe. Rock Pipit (A. petrosus) is resident on breeding sites along coasts of West and North-West Europe (ssp. petrosus) and Scandinavia (ssp. littoralis), with some migratory movements to southern coasts. Rock pipits from Faroes and northern Scottish islands attributed to a different subspecies named kleinschmidti.
