Large corvid often associated with carrion, although it is a generalist omnivore. Raven has an extensive breeding distribution across the N hemisphere, from deserts to arctic regions. In W and N Europe, it breeds mainly along rocky coasts and in mountains, in E and C Europe also in lowlands. Mostly resident except in the far N.

A Eurasian freshwater diving duck, breeding across Eurasia, East to Kamchatka. Present year-long in the W and C European range, while Nordic, Russian and Asian populations are truly migratory. The wintering range is very similar to that of the Common Pochard, including most of Europe, N Africa, the Nile Valley, and from Iran to Japan.

The species occurs in various semi-open habitats, from steppes and stony semi-desert to farmland and open woodland, human settlements, sometimes extending to boreal and tropical areas (Holt et al. 2020). Its breeding range covers big parts of Eurasia (from Portugal to the Russian Far East), N & NE Africa, and Middle East. In Europe, it is patchily distributed in C Europe and European Russia, absent in N Europe; UK population is introduced (Keller et al. 2020).

All populations are resident. However, long-distance dispersal movements are rarely recorded.

Its population trend in Europe is stable. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

Widely distributed at northern latitudes across Eurasia, common cranes used to winter in Iberia and North Africa, the Middle East and the Nile valley, and further east in northern India and southern China. The species migrates in families and formation mainly at night, with a few traditional stopover sites along the routes. The nominate subspecies breeds across Europe, while subspecies archibaldi is extralimital, breeding in eastern Turkey and the Caucasus.

Largest gull in the world with broad breeding range within N Atlantic, from E Canada/USA to the White sea (BirdLife International 2022). In Europe is a coastal seabird breeding from NW Iberia to NW Russia. Strategies vary from resident to partial migrant or migratory; migratory behaviour increases with latitude (Olsen & Larsson 2004).

The species occurs in great variety of woodland and forest, from deciduous forests to mixed and coniferous stands. It favours also parks, gardens, copses, tree lines. Species’ range extends across the temperate and boreal regions of the Palearctic, from W Europe and Scandinavia to Kamchatka, Japan & E China, as well as NW Africa, Middle East & SE Asia (Winkler et al. 2020). It is widespread in Europe, absent in the treeless zones (tundra in the far N, steppes in SW Russia) (Keller et al. 2020).

Mostly resident species, N populations prone to eruptive migration.

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

The species occupies gently flowing streams, rivers, canals, and various wetlands of still water, such as lakes, ponds, flooded gravel pits with plenty of small fish. It requires lots of perches on the banks (shrubs, reeds, broadleaved trees etc.), as well as suitable banks for nesting. The global range extends across the whole of the Palearctic, from S Scandinavia, W Europe and Mediterranean region to Japan, S & SE Asia (Woodal 2020).

Resident or short-distance migrant in W & S Europe, the populations to the N & E mostly migratory.

Its population trend in Europe is decreasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).
