Juan Arizaga

Very small warbler that feeds on arthropods, especially springtails, spiders, and aphids. Less closely associated with conifers than Goldcrest Regulus regulus, breeding also in mixed woodland and in broad-leaved woodland, especially oak; in parks, gardens, and small copses, as well as more extensive woodland. Populations are stable, not threatened. Breeds from northern Spain, Italy and Greece north to southern UK, Denmark and Lithuania. Resident or migratory. Birds from NE Europe winter in S Europe.

A migratory snipe widely distributed across Eurasia, from the Azores and Iceland to Chukotka, and from e.g. France to the Arctic tundra. There are two subspecies in Europe: faeroensis breeds in Iceland, Faeroes, Orkney and Shetland and winters in the British Isles; gallinago across the rest of the range, wintering in W and S Europe, the Mediterranean basin and sub-Saharan Africa (and furtherE in the Middle East and Asia).

A large thrush, which feeds on a wide range of invertebrates; also fruits from late summer to early winter. Breeds from E France and Norway E to E Russia, roughly between latitude 45 and 70. Winters mainly in W, C and S Europe. Usually reaches southernmost parts of Europe only in unusually cold winters and rarely N Africa. Prefers woods of birch Betula, pine Pinus, spruce Picea, alder Alnus, and mixed species, usually in open growth; often along rivers or in groups of trees in fens or bogs. Migratory to resident.

Occupies various coastal habitats – sandy, pebble or silty shores, estuaries and river deltas with scarcely vegetated water fringes. It also occurs in saline environments away from the coast (Keller et al. 2020).  Its range extends from coastal W & N Africa and W Europe through E Europe, Middle East, C & S Asia to Japan. Eurasian-African/Asian migrant, locally resident in W Europe and the Mediterranean region. European migratory populations overwinter in S Europe and Africa (N of equator) (del Hoyo et al. 2021).

A freshwater diving duck, breeding across Eurasia to 120°E, from the N Mediterranean basin up to 60°N in Siberia and above 65°N in Iceland and Finland. Present in winter across the W breeding range, although Siberian and Asian population are truly migratory, with a wintering range reaching N Africa, the whole Nile valley, and S and E Asia. The NE-NW European wintering population has decreased by 27-32% 2009-18.

Penduline tits constitute a complex of closely related taxa ranging across Eurasia, from Spain to Central Asia. Sedentary populations at southern latitudes, in Iberia, Italy, and in the Balkans, Romania to Turkey, and migratory populations further North, from North, Central to East Europe. Migratory populations do join southern sedentary populations in winter, down to Morocco (Amezian et al. 2011). Inhabit lakesides and riverine vegetation in summer, and forage in reedbeds in winter.

Michele Mendi

The largest grebe in Europe, breeding on fresh or brackish waters in various types of natural and artificial shallow wetlands with abundant vegetation and with large areas of open water. Outside breeding season occurs on ice-free exposed wetlands (lakes, reservoirs) or coastal waters. Its breeding range covers most of Europe (excl. extreme N parts), C & E Asia, parts of Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Intra-Eurasian partial migrant. Largely resident or dispersive in W & S Europe and fully migratory in N & E Europe (Llimona et al. 2020).

Its population trend in Europe is uncertain. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

Spotted Nutcracker mostly occupies coniferous forests, but occurs in a wide range of habitats during invasions to lower latitudes. Its range extends across the Palearctic, from C Europe and Scandinavia to Kamchatka and Japan, S to Tien Shan (Madge et al. 2020). In Europe, it is widespread in the taiga belt to the N, but its distribution is more fragmented in C & SE Europe where it is a mountain-dwelling species (Keller et al. 2020). It is generally a resident, with some N populations prone to irregular irruptions within Europe.

High-arctic wader rarely found away from the coast, and one of the longest-distance migratory waders. It breeds along high-arctic coasts of the Nearctic and Palearctic regions, and throughout Scandinavia and winters along the coasts of all continents, except extreme South America and Antarctica. Two known subspecies, but only nominate present in Europe and Africa.
