Common Goldeneye breeds on freshwater lakes and rivers, often in wooded areas. Outside the breeding season it occurs mostly in marine habitats, but also inland waterbodies. Its breeding range is mainly in the coniferous forest zone of Eurasia and North America. In Europe it is patchily distributed Sof the taiga (Scotland, locally in C & E Europe; Eadie et al. 2020). An intra-European migrant, it winters throughout Europe, with concentrations in the Baltic and N Seas, with decreasing numbers Sto the Mediterranean/Black Sea region.

Breeds in three distinct populations in Greenland, Svalbard and Arctic Russia/Baltic/North Sea, wintering in Northern Ireland/Islay, Scotland and the Netherlands respectively. Numbers increased dramatically following protective measures from 1960 to reach well over a million today, still increasing. Used to be strictly arctic-breeding but birds from the Russian population expanded their breeding range to the southwest, with colonies now found throughout the flyway (van der Jeugd et al. 2009). Favours breeding on small islands in vicinity of open grassland areas, but can nest on cliffs, in meadows and even pine forests.

Red-backed Shrike prefers open and semi-open habitats with a mosaic of short and tall grassy vegetation, bare ground, shrubs and low trees which provide lookout posts. Its breeding range includes most of Europe (except NW, N & SW), Asia Minor, Levant (locally) and further E in Asia to NW Iran & WC Siberia (Yosef et al. 2020). In Europe, the strongholds are in the E of the continent - Romania, Poland, Bulgaria & Russia hold 75% of the European population (Keller et al. 2020). It is a Eurasian-African migrant, wintering in E tropical and S Africa.

The species prefers deciduous and mixed woodland with mature rough-bark trees, copses, orchards, gardens and parks, usually with dense understorey. Its range covers most of C, W, S & SE Europe, parts of Asia Minor and NW Africa (Harrap 2020).

Essentially resident species. Limited short-distance – sometimes altitudinal, movements.

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

In Europe, resident populations concentrate in the S and W, also British Islands, whilst migratory ones breed in the E and N. Wintering in Europe in the S and W part, up to N Africa (BirdLife International 2021).

Fish-eating diurnal bird of prey with cosmopolitan/worldwide distribution. Migratory strategies vary from resident to migratory. European ospreys migrate, except in some Mediterranean islands, where most birds are resident (BirdLife International 2021, Monti 2021). Migratory populations from Europe winter across a wide belt from west to east in sub-Saharan Africa (Hake et al. 2001Zwarts et al. 2009), though some birds also overwinter in S Europe/N Africa.

This large sandpiper, with a brick-red body in summer, has two distinct populations visiting Europe. Nominate subspecies canutus breeds in Taymyr, C Siberia, and winters in Africa, while islandica breeds in Greenland and the Canadian high Arctic, and winters in W Europe. The species is globally listed as Near Threatened, but canutus populations have declined in the recent decades. Trends in islandica numbers are uncertain.

Very small warbler that feeds on arthropods, especially springtails, spiders, and aphids. Less closely associated with conifers than Goldcrest Regulus regulus, breeding also in mixed woodland and in broad-leaved woodland, especially oak; in parks, gardens, and small copses, as well as more extensive woodland. Populations are stable, not threatened. Breeds from northern Spain, Italy and Greece north to southern UK, Denmark and Lithuania. Resident or migratory. Birds from NE Europe winter in S Europe.
