The species occurs in deciduous and mixed woodland with a substantial shrub layer, favouring edge zones; it occupies a variety of semiopen habitats with scattered trees and bushes, suburban parks, and gardens. Its range extends across the Palearctic region, from W Europe & Scandinavia to Kamchatka & Japan, S to the Middle East (Harrap 2020). It is widespread in Europe, except for N Fennoscandia, SW Russian steppes and some islands (Keller et al. 2020).

Mostly resident species in the temperate and Mediterranean regions, N populations are partially migratory.

Its population trend in Europe is stable. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

Smallest bird of Europe. Feeds on insects and spiders. In breeding season, strictly arboreal, attached to more or less dense stands of well-grown conifers. Prefers spruce Picea abies, silver fir Abies alba, and mountain pine Pinus mugo, and in artificial situations also Douglas fir Pseudotsuga taxifolia. Population slightly decreasing although not yet considered as threatened. Breeds in middle and northern Europe, except northern parts of Fennoscandia and Russia. Resident or migratory. European race, nominate regulus, winters within and south of breeding range, and vacates entirely only the northern parts of the breeding area. There can be wide annual fluctuations in migration numbers.

One of Europe’s most numerous songbirds with extremely large breeding range, inhabiting woodlands, extensively managed agricultural areas and urban environments. Well known for impressive murmurations at roosting sites. Colonized the USA, Australia and South-Africa artificially. Breeds in natural cavities as well as nest boxes and other man-made structures. Feeds on soil living invertebrates during breeding and also fruits during winter. Facultative migrants with W European populations remaining at the breeding grounds year-round and NE European populations migrating short-distances. European breeding population 28,800,000-52,400,000. Declining trend.

Large, long-legged and well-known bird breeding in open farmland areas near wetlands, building a large stick nest in trees, buildings, or man-made platforms. Long-distance migrant. Diet broad, ranging from insects to small mammals and amphibians, young birds, and outside breeding season, garbage rom landfill sites. Massive decline in Western Europe in 19th century due to industrialisation and agricultural changes. After local reintroduction population now large and increasing. Large populations in central and Eastern Europe, Iberia, and Turkey. European population 224,000-247,000 pairs.
