Medium-sized raptor, feeds mainly on nests, larvae, pupae, and adults of social wasps, hornets, bumble-bees; also other insects, small animals, nestlings and eggs of birds. Monotypic, breeds in Europe except Ireland, W and N Scandinavia, N Russia and parts of Iberia and Balkan, mainly in forests with ample clearings, glades, or rides, where light soil suitable for digging. Population stable, hence status is Least Concern. Migratory; almost entirely a summer visitor to Europe. Migrate mostly using thermals also capable of crossing large water bodies using non-stop flapping flights (Vansteelant & Agostini 2021).

The species breeds on fresh or brackish waters occupying small natural and shallow wetlands with abundant vegetation. During migration and winter occurs mostly on marine (coastal) waters, usually less than 10-20m in depth. It has circumpolar distribution – the breeding range covers most of N & NW Europe, the taiga belt E to Kamchatka, N & NW North America (Stedman 2020). The abundance hotspots in Europe are N Iceland, E Sweden, SW Finland and Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Intra-European migrant. Outside breeding season moves further S or to nearby seas.

Its population trend in Europe is decreasing. Evaluated as “Vulnerable” (BirdLife International 2021).

Found in S Europe, the Middle East across to India, and Africa (BirdLife International 2021). Populations vary from resident to long-distance migrant. In Europe, most individuals move to the sub-Saharan belt in summer/autumn where they spend the winter; some populations from islands, like Sicily, the Balearics and the Canaries are resident (BirdLife International 2021, Di Vittorio et al. 2016). Wintering in continental Spain also documented (Morant et al. 2020).

The species favours deep wetlands, fresh or brackish waters, rich in fringing vegetation – primarily large lakes and lagoons; less often, river deltas, estuaries and smaller lakes are occupied. Patchily distributed in C, S and SE Europe, the main breeding range is from Black and Caspian Seas E to C Asia (Carboneras, Kirwan, 2020).

The European population largely concentrated in SW Russia (Keller et al. 2020).

Intra-European/N African partial migrant – it winters in the Mediterranean basin, around Black and Caspian Seas, иn C Europe as well. Some populations relatively sedentary.

Not globally threatened with unknown population trend in Europe (BirdLife International 2021).

Eastern Imperial Eagle A. heliaca is distributed from Central and South-East Europe across Russia and Kazakhstan to North-West China. European populations are migratory. The wintering range includes Turkey, the Middle East and East Africa, also from Iran to East China.

Spanish Imperial Eagle A. adalberti is endemic to Iberia, resident in central and western Spain, and colonized recently Portugal. Recent evidence of dispersal by immatures to Morocco.

Long-distance migratory seabird coming to land only to breed. Breeds on high Arctic tundra’s or sub-Arctic Scandinavian mountain tundra’s. Breeds only in years when lemming densities reach a certain threshold. Feeds on marine invertebrates, carrion and kleptoparasites other seabirds during the non-breeding season. European breeding population 265,000-710,000. Stable population trend.

Colonial breeder which occupies various well-vegetated fresh-water wetlands – marshes, lakes, deltas, slow-flowing river systems. In winter, it can be seen on brackish or salt water as well (Nelson 2005).

It occurs discontinuously from SE Europe and Asia Minor E to C Asia (Tajikistan), N part of Middle East. Romania holds the bulk of European breeding population. Partially migratory; some populations undertake short-distance movements, others are resident. N populations winter in S part of the range (Orta et al. 2020).

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).
