The species breeds in various types of well-vegetated wetlands – both natural (lakes, marshes, rivers) and artificial (fish-ponds) (Gochfeld et al. 2020). It has discontinuous distribution across Eurasia, Africa and Australia. In Europe, the species occurs mostly in the E part, some populations present also in the W. The bulk of European population (ca. 65%) is found in Romania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and Azerbaijan (Keller et al. 2020).

Eurasian-African migrant. African wintering grounds are mainly N of the equator. Low number of birds are resident in S Europe.

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

Gunther Zieger

A nocturnal insectivorous bird inhabiting forests and moorland, with particularly high densities in Mediterranean open woodlands. Long-distance migrant breeding across most of lowland Europe, north to S Fennoscandia and E to Russia, range also extends to Asia and North Africa. Large winter range across sub-Saharan Africa.

The species occupies for breeding deep lakes and rivers – often in wooded country, mainly across the Holarctic boreal zone: most of N North America, S Greenland, Iceland, N Europe (with some isolated breeding sites in C and SE Europe), N Asia. Outside breeding season it occurs mainly on coastal waters (Craik et al. 2020).

Intra-Eurasian partial migrant, resident or locally dispersive in much of NW Europe. Its wintering grounds include most of coastal zones in N and NW Europe, but also the Black Sea/ E Mediterranean region, and the S Caspian Sea as well.

Not globally threatened but declining on a European scale (Keller et al., 2020).

Woodchat Shrike occurs in warm, open or semi-open areas, breeding in various mosaic habitats, interspersed with low and high herbaceous and shrubby vegetation, as well as scattered trees (Harris & Frankiln 2000). Its distribution is largely restricted to Mediterranean Europe, NW and N Africa, Caucasus and E to Iran, with some scattered populations in C Europe (Cramp & Perrins 1993). European strongholds of the species are located in the Iberian and Balkan Peninsulas (Keller et al. 2020). It is a European-African migrant, wintering in sub-Saharan Africa N of the equator (mostly the Sahel zone).

Arctic breeding plover with a circumpolar breeding range across Siberia and Canada, wintering along coasts of all oceans, in Europe from the British coasts to the Mediterranean basin. Probably monotypic, though if polytypic, only squatarola breeds and winters in Europe.

The formerly Olivaceus warbler species is, today, splitted into the Eastern (pallida)/Western (opaca) Olivaceus warbler, breeding respectively in SE and SW Europe (Keller et al. 2020). Long-distance migratory species wintering, respectively, in W and E Africa (Kennerley & Pearson 2010).

Long-distance migrant passerine breeding in mires of flooded plains in C and E Europe. There has been a steep decline in recent decades due to habitat destruction. Most remaining populations are in Poland and Belarus, with some in Lithuania and Russia and a relict population in Pomerania, Germany. Winters in flooded Sahelian grasslands in W Africa, S Mauritania, Senegal and Mali (Salewski et al. 2009Poluda et al. 2012).

The species breeds in various types of shallow freshwater wetlands rich in vegetation. Outside breeding season occurs on open standing waters and marine (coastal) waters. Its breeding range covers most of Europe (excl. N parts), S & E Africa, Asia (discontinuous range), W & C North America (Llimona et al. 2020). The European population largely concentrated in Russia and Ukraine (74%) (Keller et al. 2020).

Intra-Eurasian migrant. Most birds fully migratory, some locally resident to the S. Mediterranean region/ S Europe hold the major wintering grounds. Its population trend in Europe is considered unknown. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).

The species occurs in sunny, open landscapes rich in steep slopes of soft soil (riverbanks, pits, loess walls) and large flying insects. Its distribution extends from NW Africa and Iberian Peninsula N to Denmark and E to W Mongolia and NW China (Bastian & Bastian 2022).

In Europe, the species occurs mostly in S & E Europe, with patchy distribution in C Europe. European strongholds are located in Spain in SE Europe (Russia, Ukraine, E Balkan Peninsula), Asia Minor (Keller et al. 2020).

Eurasian-African migrant. European populations winter in W, E & S Africa.

Its European population trend is stable on a short-term. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2022).

Great Grey Shrike breeds in semi-open or open habitats in subarctic and temperate climates with scattered trees, bushes, fence-posts and powerlines, forest edges and clearings in the N, sometimes marshland and peat bogs. Non-breeding habitats are similar. Its wide distribution covers most of Europe E to C Siberia, C & S Asia, N Africa & the Middle East (Yosef et al. 2020). The European strongholds are in Fennoscandia & CE Europe (Keller et al. 2020). It is an intra-Eurasian migrant, with winter quarters generally S of the breeding sites.
