Michele Mendi

A vulture species with a moderately small population which breeds from W Europe to C Asia (BirdLife International 2021). Migratory behavior vary from resident in Europe (Castaño et al. 2015) to migratory in Asia (Andevski et al. 2017) . Its distribution in Europe is very fragmented, limited to the Mediterranean peninsulas (mainly Iberia), the Balearics and S France. Included in the Global IUCN Red List Category as Nearly Threatened (UICN 2021).

Overall Connectivity for Cinereous Vulture

Small amount of ring-recovery data. Current knowledge about their movement patterns come from PVC-ringing or GPS-tracking (Del Moral & De la Puente, 2017). SW European individuals show random dispersal movements within a radius of (usually) <1000 km from ringing site. This dispersal mostly involves juvenile or immature birds (Del Moral & De la Puente, 2017). Individuals from S France recovered as far as The Netherlands, more commonly in Spain, Italy or Sardinia. Spanish individuals seem to disperse mostly within Iberia, but the literature shows that some birds can reach (exceptionally) even W Africa (Cantos & Gómez-Manzaneque, 1996).

Recoveries by Condition for Cinereous Vulture

Data only from 1991 to present. Limited amount of data (47 recoveries). Overall, 53% found alive (mostly with leg ring(s), color marks or other means), 43% dead. A 11% of dead recoveries caused by electrocution.

Annual Movements for Cinereous Vulture

European population is resident, with just some juvenile dispersion. This dispersion occurs from Jul onwards. Complementary bibliographic data state that there are two main patterns of dispersal: those birds which leave their natal sites soon and fly long distances, and those which remain close to these natal sites and then move progressively farther away (Del Moral & De la Puente, 2017).
