Michele Mendi

This reedbed passerine has an extended mid-latitudes distribution across Eurasia, highly fragmented in Europe, ranging from Spain (Peiró 2013) to southern Finland. Mostly resident in the south, some short-distance movements in the north. Tightly linked to Phragmites reedbeds across its range.

Overall Connectivity for Bearded Tit

There are thousands of ring re-encounters further than 50 km from the ringing site, though most of them obtained within a few hundred kilometres, also few up to 900 km. So the bearded tit is clearly a dispersive species (Axell 1966), with sometimes some movements at longer distances, along a classical north-east to south-west direction, though tits hardly move from one region to another. There are however some movements between the British Isles and the continent, or between southern Fennoscandia and Central Europe (Horˇák et al. 2003).

Recoveries by Condition for Bearded Tit

The few old recoveries were of dead birds, but post 1960, and even more recent data concern almost only live recoveries, with most data obtained in the 2000s.

Annual Movements for Bearded Tit

The movements attested by long-distance ring recoveries are probably dependant on particular resource or meteorological conditions, explaining the unusual dispersion of some birds in some years at unusual distances.

Connectivity by Month by Region for Bearded Tit

Most long-distance recoveries have been obtained in November, December and January, more rarely at the end of October, with no geographical pattern among the different regions in Europe.
