The species occurs in various types of mostly open landscape mosaics, including pastures, parkland, orchards, sand-heathland, olive groves, vineyard etc. Its breeding range stretches over S Palearctic (from Macaronesian Is to Japan), sub-Saharan Africa and S Asia. European strongholds are mainly located in the Mediterranean region (Keller et al. 2020, Krištín & Kirwan 2020).

European-African migrant. Most European populations winter in Africa S of Sahara, some Mediterranean breeders are partially migratory.

Its population trend in Europe is uncertain. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2022).
