Matthias Putze

Nocturnal insectivorous bird, long-distance trans-Saharan migrant. Breeding distribution restricted to Iberia and North-West Africa (Camacho 2013; Forero et al. 2001), wintering range across Western Sahelian Africa, mainly in southern Mali and adjacent Niger. Moult occurs on the wintering grounds (Gargallo 1994).

Overall Connectivity for Red-necked Nightjar

Overall direction of migration is southwards, from Iberia to West Africa. No ringing recoveries in Africa (though one at Ceuta), so no clear indication of connectivity, though the breeding and known wintering ranges are relatively restricted so connectivity is no major question. A few winter recoveries in Iberia indicate rare overwintering there, but the rule is migratory behaviour.

Recoveries by Condition for Red-necked Nightjar

Numerous road casualties (more than one third) beyond ringing recaptures before 1960, but almost only ringing casualties after 1990.

Annual Movements for Red-necked Nightjar

Birds on the move between Iberia and Africa have been re-encountered mainly in April and October. There is no recovery in Europe in November and March.

Connectivity by Month by Region for Red-necked Nightjar

Movements between Iberia to Africa most likely through the straits of Gibraltar, as recoveries during the first two decades of April and during October are all concentrated in this region. Most northern breeding sites deserted by early October and reoccupied from early May.
