Breeds in tundra birch forest across the N hemisphere. Part of redpoll complex with sister species: C. flammea and C. cabaret. Migratory strategies vary from resident (S part of breeding area) to migratory (N part of breeding area). Wintering distribution up to middle latitudes across N hemisphere (BirdLife International 2021).
Few recoveries, hampering us to obtain firm patterns for the hornemanni redpoll, though molecular studies suggest weak support to consider it as a separate species within the redpoll complex (Marthinsen et al. 2008). Thus, we strongly recommend to pool recoveries from hornemanni and flammea together. Recoveries from hornemanni mainly from N Scandinavia, following on average a N-S axis. Two recoveries at >2000 km, rest <1000 km, mainly from S Scandinavia to C Europe (though notice the few amount of data) . Impossible to disentangle connectivity patters due to the low amount of data.
Recoveries by Condition for Arctic Redpoll
Overall, most recoveries due to ringing (96%). No data before 1960. During the 1961-1990 time period, 92% of recoveries due to ringing activities. From 1991 to present, 97% of recoveries are due to ringing.
Annual Movements for Arctic Redpoll
Movements to S Scandinavia from Aug to Oct. Outstanding recovery of an individual ringed in Sweden in Oct, then shot in N of Kazakhstan in Dec. Spring movements back to breeding quarters from Feb to Mar (Clement 2010).
