Resident around the Mediterranean basin, across the Middle East, India to coastal China. Range extends to coastal Mauritania in winter. Immatures can undergo long-distance dispersal movements.
Long-distance ringing recoveries are rare, most being obtained within a few hundred kilometres from the ringing site. Direction of observed movements are mainly to the SW, from southern France to Iberia or within Iberia, but there are also dispersal movements to any other directions, including immatures moving to the North, mostly in winter. Most recoveries have been obtained after 1990, and only 20% concern live birds.
Recoveries by Condition for Bonelli's Eagle
Most recoveries concern birds found dead, the major cause of death being electrocution (44% of all recoveries). A few have been shot (6% of all recoveries), which is unacceptable for such a protected and endangered eagle.
Annual Movements for Bonelli's Eagle
The dispersal strategy of juveniles is individually variable (Cadahía et al. 2010), and recent tracking data revealed unexpected movements up to Denmark. Ringing recoveries also allowed to estimate the natal dispersal in the species, up to >440 kilometres (Cadahía et al. 2009).
Connectivity by Month by Region for Bonelli's Eagle
Recoveries are concentrated around early May, with also another period covering September-November. These periods represent the emancipation of post-fledging dispersal of juveniles, and the spring movements to return closer to the natal area (Hernández-Matías et al. 2010).
