Long-distance migratory songbird, inhabiting old and riverine deciduous forests. Breeding distribution covers temperate forests across Europe from the Atlantic to Asia beyond the Urals, excluding the British Isles and most of Fennoscandia, though present in coastal southern Sweden and SE Finland. Winters in C and southern Africa, from the Central African Republic to South Africa (Baumann 2001).

Overall Connectivity for Eurasian Golden Oriole

The direction of observed movements from Europe is S-SE, from C or S-Central Europe to C Africa. There are no encounters of breeders from the SW in West Africa, also suggest ing SE movements, towards Algeria/Tunisia/Libya, to reach C Africa. There is no evidence of connectivity between breeding and wintering regions from the few recoveries but, at least within Europe, the individual routes of recovered birds are longitudinally structured and parallel.

Recoveries by Condition for Eurasian Golden Oriole

Before 1991, most recoveries were of dead birds.  However, increased ringing effort at migration stopover sites and constant effort sites means that the majority of records since 1991 (77%) are now recaptures by ringers.

Annual Movements for Eurasian Golden Oriole

The first birds return to the SW at the end of Apr mainly May and the last leave in Sep. The same pattern is seen for breeders in the SC region, although some individuals are still in N Africa in early May, and there are Sep records in the Nile Valley. Breeders from C Europe depart mainly in Sep, and settle in May. Breeders from the W and SW have a clockwise, loop migration, returning from the East (Dimaki et al. 2019).

The few encounters from the winter range occured in Dec, Mar and Apr, with encounters in N Africa from May and Sep.
