Long-distance migratory songbird, inhabiting old and riverine deciduous forests. Breeding distribution covers temperate forests across Europe from the Atlantic to Asia beyond the Urals, excluding the British Isles and most of Fennoscandia, though present in coastal southern Sweden and SE Finland. Winters in C and southern Africa, from the Central African Republic to South Africa (Baumann 2001).
