In Europe ssp. gibraltariensis breeds east to Ukraine and Crimea. Birds of central and northwest Europe are migrants, wintering mainly in the Mediteranean area, including north Africa, but also in small numbers in Britain and western France. Birds of southern Europe are mainly resident. Breeds in rocky, stony terrain, including cliffs. Often uses walls and roofs of buildings as nest-site. Feeds on small invertebrates but also fruit and seeds. Population is stable in most countries but has increased in northwest Europe.
