The largest of terns breeding in Europe. It occupies for breeding various habitats – from coastal saline to inland freshwater wetlands. Outside breeding season the habitats are similar, but the species is mainly confined to the coast (Cuthbert, Wires, 2020).

Cosmopolitan species with discontinuous distribution in North America, Eurasia, Africa and Australia. In Europe, it occurs in two separated ranges – the Caspian-Black Sea and the Baltic Sea regions (Keller et al. 2020).

European populations are migratory, the wintering grounds being largely in Africa.

Its population trend in Europe is increasing. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).
