Long-distance migrant breeding in W Europe to NW Africa. Wintering quarters across a relatively narrow band across tropical West Africa (BirdLife International 2021). Sister species H. icterina, with parapatric E distribution except in overlapping ranges in NE France (Kennerley & Pearson 2010).
Clear S/SW axis of migration, entering NW Africa through Iberia (Pilastro et al. 1998). No recoveries in winter quarters in Africa, so ring-recovery data only show movements patterns across the Palaearctic, mostly from SW Europe to Morocco. Degree of connectivity difficult to determine, in part due to the relatively small breeding range, and the lack of recoveries in winter quarters. Outstanding data of an individual captured/recaptured in N UK (this might need revision).
Contrôles par Condition for Hypolaïs polyglotte
Overall, 98% of recoveries due to birds recaptured alive due to ringing. No data before 1960. Between 1961-1990, ca. 80% of the recoveries due to ringing, 15% dead recoveries. Nowadays, 99% of recoveries associated to recaptures of ringed birds under ringing campaigns.
Annual Movements for Hypolaïs polyglotte
Departure from breeding area in late Jul, with passage through Europe in autumn up to Sep. According to literature, arrival to winter quarters in Africa, from Senegal to Nigeria, from late Aug to Nov (Kennerley & Pearson 2010). Return spring migration starts as early as Feb, with a peak in Europe from late Apr to May (Kennerley & Pearson 2010).
Connectivité par mois par région pour Hypolaïs polyglotte
Recoveries in Iberia mainly from Aug to Oct, reflecting migration to Africa. Several recoveries in Morocco in Apr and May, during spring passage back to Europe.
