Large thrush, feeds on a wide variety of invertebrates, in autumn and winter also berries. Nominate viscivorus: Western Palearctic (except range of deichleri) to W Siberia; deichleri: NW Africa, Corsica and Sardinia; bonapartei: E Siberia to C Asia and the Himalayas. Is vulnerable to cold, especially snow and ice, and avoids arid and very warm areas. Widely but thinly distributed in stands of tall trees near to open grassland or short herbage; avoids dense forests. Population is decreasing but large enough to assign the status of Least Concern. Migratory in NE of range to sedentary in SW.
