Breeds in the Arctic and it has a circumpolar distribution, though some birds can reach wintering sites at very S latitudes, often after heavy storms/harsh conditions within the boreal region (Olsen & Larsson 2004). Four subspecies; L. h. hyperboreus is the one breeding in N Europe. Strategies vary from resident to partial migrant (Petersen et al. 2015).

Connectivité globale pour Goéland bourgmestre

Limited amount of ring-recovery data in Europe. Most recoveries come from individuals ringed as chicks in Svalbard (many in Bjørnøya -Bear Island-), or birds caught in winter seen then alive subsequently. Recoveries from Svalbard spread across a wide region situated SW to SE of this archipelago, more or less from S Greenland to W Siberia, reaching (exceptionally) UK and the North sea area. Recoveries of birds caught and ringed in winter normally show short-range movements, reflecting some degree of winter site fidelity (see for instance winter-winter recoveries in S Scandinavia).

Overall, most recoveries are due to birds seen alive, identified by other means than ringing (64%). The proportion of dead recoveries by shooting is only 5.3% but this category represented 75% of the recoveries in the pre-1960 time period. This category decreased down to 68% between 1961-1990 and had a great decrease down to 3.9% in the 1991-to present time period. Nowadays, recoveries due to birds seen alive represent >90% of the total.

Annual Movements for Goéland bourgmestre

Southwards movements start soon after breeding, in Aug up to Oct. Recoveries in winter quarters mostly from Oct to Mar (most from Nov to Feb). Return to breeding area in Apr-May (Olsen & Larsson 2004).
