Gunther Zieger

Smallest snipe, often very confident, breeding in boreal and subarctic regions from NE Scandinavia to E Siberia, with an isolated population in the E Baltic region. Winters in the British Isles to the Mediterranean basin E to S India, and across a large belt across the N Afrotropics.

Migration is generally NE-SW, with some moving S. Bergner et al. (2017) report a migratory divide near 45°E, with birds breeding to the W wintering mainly in the British Isles, SW Europe and NW Africa. Birds breeding further E are considered long-distance migrants wintering in sub-Saharan Africa (Taylor 1988), which may be illustrated by two recoveries in Senegal, although there is little ringing in E Europe (Baltic states). A number of birds occasionally winter in N Europe, but the bulk winter in NW and SW Europe. Three recoveries of birds from the N during the breeding season (May-July), moving to Denmark and the British Isles in winter. Only one bird has been recovered in Siberia (Komi Republic), although most Jack Snipes probably breed there.

Before 1991 most recoveries were of birds found dead, although there are few data in this period compared to the larger samples dominated by live recoveries associated with an increasing effort in ringing the species since 1996. As a gamebird, most dead recoveries are of hunted birds, which are  concentrated in France, Ireland, Denmark, as well as Italy, Iberia and Morocco.

In the British Isles, birds arrive on the wintering grounds mid-Sep to early October, with departures in the second half of Apr (Cooney 2017). In S Sweden, the peak of migration is in the first dekad of Oct, with juveniles passing through a few days earlier than adults (Bergner et al. 2021). Birds wintering in SW Europe migrate NE, while those wintering in SC Europe move N-S.

The ringing effort is concentrated in the SW half of Europe, on stopover and wintering sites, and most recoveries are in the same region, providing information on movements there during the non-breeding season (Sep to Apr). There are very few recoveries on breeding grounds, mainly in May, one in Jul. There is active migration in S Scandinavia and tto the S in Sep-Oct and Mar-Apr.
