The species occurs in a wide diversity of open (but not treeless) habitats, such as grasslands, deserts, marshes, and agricultural fields, but also human settlements of various types. The species is widespread in Europe (except for Fennoscandia and European Russia) and Africa (except for Sahara desert). Most populations are resident, but some long-distance movements occur during dispersal (juveniles) or in prey numbers fluctuations (adults) (Marti et al. 2020).

In Europe, the highest abundances are observed in C & S Europe (Keller et al. 2020).

Its population trend in Europe is fluctuating. Evaluated as “Least Concern” (BirdLife International 2021).
