Romanian Ornithological Center is a research unit with a long tradition of bird ringing. Since it was formed in 1939 it has focused on the research of wild bird movements and migration pathways. ROC is responsible for the organizing, coordinating and supervising of bird ringing in Romania, resighting and recovery data of ringed birds and constant communication with other ringing centres. Now our current efforts are centered on the Black Sea cost and Danube Delta on the Via Pontica migration route, and on conservation projects. We are a full member of EURING family and for the European Migration Atlas we managed to provide some valuable recoveries for the South-Eastern part of Europe, mostly historical data. Our contribution comprises recoveries for 169 species from over fifty schemes, including closed and active ones.
We now have the opportunity to recognize the hard work and devotion of the founders and our predecessors who started and carefully managed the data: Ion Cătuneanu, Radu Dimitrie și Mircea Gogu-Bogdan, also a great number of contributors from the main research and ringing centers in the country: „Grigore Antipa” Natural History Museum, Municipal Museum of Mediaș, Nature Monuments Commission - Romanian Academy, Danube Delta National Research and Development Institute, „Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, Romanian Ornithological Society, Milvus group Association and others, and to the many and restful ringers and volunteers whom we are grateful. We also express our gratitude to the colleagues that actively contributed to the development of our database: Viorel Gavril Dumitru, Marian Gherghina, Gabriel Chişamera and Stanciu Cătălin Răzvan.
